A work party is not a meeting. Something gets built.
The old kind was neighbours arriving with tools to raise one barn in one day. Nobody took minutes. What made it work was that the agreement was obvious, the labour was visible, and everyone could see when it was done. This is that, for the agreements that hold groups together when the work is not a barn.
Talking and deciding are different acts
Most tools collapse them, and the collapse is why so many groups feel busy and stuck at once. A conversation with no record produces the sensation of alignment without the fact of it. A record with no conversation produces compliance.
So they are two layers here. The hearth is where a group talks and where dissent stays visible. This is where it writes down what it settled: the agreement, who is doing it, by when, and what would count as done.
The agreements file
The same shape as the values file this ecosystem already runs on, pointed at a second noun. Your values file says what matters to you. An agreements file says what a group committed to.
- Plain, readable, yoursA file a person can open, read aloud in a room, and disagree with. No database, no account, no export button needed because it was never held anywhere else.
- Dated, and corrections keptAgreements change. The record shows what was agreed and when it was revised, because a file that silently overwrites its own history is not a record.
- Leaving is a right, not a breachAnyone can walk away with a copy. A group whose members cannot leave with the record is not a group with agreements; it is a group with a hostage.
- Read before it is writtenThe first thing an agreements file should be able to hold is not a charter. It is a reading: who examined a claim, when, and what they tried to break.
Where this honestly stands
More of this is built than the name suggests, which is the opposite of the usual problem. Two surfaces already ship: one finds where a group agrees and where it splits, the other turns that into a plan with a reason on every line. Both run on files, locally, with no server deciding for anyone.
What is missing is the durable record: the file that outlives the session. That, and a group using it for something that matters to them.
Why this layer decides whether the rest matters
A mesh network with no coordinated community is copper and hope. A map of places is a list until someone organises a visit. Even the premise of this Institute turns on it: if nobody did this to us and the cause is an incentive we are all inside, then the unit of change is a group small enough to agree and stubborn enough to keep a record.
Which is why it is a work party rather than a platform. The point was never the software.
